Switching Gears for a Bit – Going for Residual Income

I’m going to be taking a different route the next month or so of working online. I will be in college for the next 5 weeks, taking 2 classes. This will put me at school most of the day, Monday-Thursday, and have me doing homework on the weekends. This will leave little time to work on creating niche sites or meeting deadlines for writing clients.

Therefore, I am going to join a couple of residual income writing sites, and try my hand at those. Previously, I’ve only written for eHow, but now that it’s with Demand Studios, I believe it’s harder to get articles approved. I’m going to look into that, but I am also going to start submitting at Infobarrel and possibly Associated Content. I’ll be submitting sparingly, but hopefully it will start to add up. If I like what I see within in the next few weeks, I may continue writing for these sites or go back to solely working on niche sites and writing for clients. Either way, this will be another income stream…because it’s never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket!

eHow – Still Worth your Time?

eHow has been doing a bunch of “house cleaning” lately, getting rid of several hundreds articles written by its members. This has outraged some of the writers, as it appears that many of the articles removed were their highest earners. Some are still seeing their articles appearing on the website, and others are having their article link redirect to another article written by eHow’s in-house editors or writers paid for their work directly by eHow’s parent company, Demand Media (through Demand Studios). This is beginning to worry and infuriate some people…to the extent that they are moving all of their content to other residual income sites.

So, should you scratch eHow in favor for other sites just yet? I’m currently at 16 articles with the site, and luckily have not lost any of my content. I am making about $8/month, which I know isn’t great, but some of the articles are rather new. Plus, I was planning to set a goal to add a certain number of new articles in July. Now, I’m not so sure I want to. For the moment, I believe I am going to wait it out and see how it goes for the writers who have lost their work…and also to see what eHow’s ultimate intentions are. Are they really trying to scrape their site of useless or repetitive content, or are they seeking to make more money by scraping all the high earning articles of other writers and replacing them with own writings?

What’s your thoughts on the current eHow scrape?

Rounding Out June

Wow, where has this month gone? It’s been quite a while since I’ve stopped by here and blogged, but the month of June has practically flew by me! I celebrated my 25th birthday on the 11th, which was quite nice, thanks to my husband and family. The rest of this month has just been applying for writing gigs and working.

I’m now up to 16 articles on eHow, which is bringing in about $8/month. 5 of these articles have just been posted within the last month, so I’m sure they haven’t reached their full earning potential yet. I’ve been making use of the Groups at eHow, posting my articles in a few as soon as I write them. This has helped me get comments and friends on the site…which seems beneficial to my earnings.

Demand Studios is currently taking up most of my writing time. They have changed their queue guidelines so that there is not much of a limit any longer. Before, I had a limit of 10 articles that I could hold in my queue at one time. When I wrote an article, it stayed in my queue and took up one space until it was approved by an editor. After the changes took place, articles that are under review no longer count toward the queue limit. I’ve increased my writing there, and have also reduced the number of rewrites I have received. I decided to branch out from writing only “How To’s” and found that I like the “About” format much better.

I purchased a domain name for my portfolio a few months ago, and I am considering moving my blog over to it. The reason for this is that I like blogging with WordPress on an independent domain much better than using a free blog like this one here at Blogger.com. I just have to figure out how to switch it over, but expect a new location soon!

I am Alive!

So, my readers may think I fell off the face of the Earth, but if you follow me on Twitter, you know that college has consumed my life for the past week and half or so. I had an end of the semester project which consisted of an experiment, research paper, and PowerPoint presentation due, as well as two tests and a final exam since April 21. This has left me with little time to write for income, and virtually no time to write for pleasure (eHow, here, my personal blog, etc.).

However, school is out for summer!! I will be returning in the fall to begin the teaching program, but until August, I plan on kicking my freelance writing into overdrive. I plan to develop this blog a whole more, as well as increasing my earnings, both active and passive. Demand Studios, Just Articles, and Need an Article will be the bulk of my active income, unless I land some sweet clients along the way. For residual income, I’m focusing my efforts on eHow.

Speaking of eHow, I checked my April earnings for eHow today, and made $5.82 on 8 articles. I definitely plan on expanding on this, as I will now have more time to write. No more 4 day a week school schedule. Also, we’re not planning a vacation for the summer, so I’ll have almost 3 solid months of writing as much as I please.
